Occupied Palestine: What is this Israeli tent city about?

There have been massive protests breaking out in Israel over the cost of living and the shortages of housing. A quarter million filled the streets of Jerusalem, causing widespread coverage in the world’s media. On one level, it appears to be an echo of the upsurge that now rings the Mediterranean (starting in Tunesia, and rippling through Egypt, Libya, Syria, Greece, Spain and more).

On the other hand, each of these countries is different — and the meaning of such protests is not identical.

The following appeared in Electronic Intefada. Jeff W. proposed posting it here saying:

“This is for Kasama, if you would: a blog entry from a 16-year-old Palestinian high school student in Ramallah, Jalal Abukhater, containing interesting political questions we all should consider.”

Posting it here on Kasama does not imply support for its arguments — but it is shared because it will be of interest to our community of readers. Is this the way we should view a popular protest movement over economic problems that avoids the burning issues defining a society?

“I am not saying there weren’t chants against the occupation, that there weren’t calls for equal treatment for all citizens, Jewish and Arab (in occupied territories too). There were, but the movement organizers decided not to address those crucial issues because they were afraid to lose popular support from Jewish Israeli participants. Organizers have said clearly that they want to keep this movement “apolitical” therefore not addressing racism, not addressing occupation, not addressing ethnic cleansing and simply call for social justice only for the dominant Jewish majority.

“A list of official demands has emerged but it doesn’t address any of the issues I stated. This is a blind movement as long as it doesn’t address crucial issues which are the reason of all this.”

Sun, 08/07/2011 — These protests started when some Israelis decided to protest high prices of Tel Aviv apartments by setting up tents in Tel Aviv’s Rothschild boulevard. This movement assigned #j14 as a hashtag people use to discuss this topic on the internet, it stands for July 14, the day it all began.

#J14 developed into protests calling for Social Justice for the citizens of Israel. It started with youth protesting housing prices and turned into a massive movement that included doctors, lawyers, social workers, government employees etc. all protesting low wages and demand social justice. On Saturday, 300,000 Israelis took to the streets to participate in the protest. This movement is something that cannot be ignored, it is the awakening of a people which has for long been unawakened. But, what are they being awakened to?

The real defect the state of Israel suffered since it’s inception is Zionism which led to ethnic cleansing, occupation, and later Apartheid. One thing #j14 has failed to address since it began is the necessity to end occupation to be able to come out of the protests with actual results and not something that would simply continue with the ill treatment of Palestinians inside Israel and the occupied territories.

Now, it is important to clarify that I am not saying there weren’t chants against the occupation, that there weren’t calls for equal treatment for all citizens, Jewish and Arab (in occupied territories too). A list of official demands has emerged but it doesn’t address any of the issues I stated. This is a blind movement as long as it doesn’t address crucial issues which are the reason of all this.

The Israeli Government is putting a lot of its money to maintain an occupation which will not last! Today, a lot of settlers are moving into West Bank settlements because of cheaper housings and cheaper life styles. Settlers are lured into Settlements because the rightest government offers them easy life there. Those who stay to live in cities like Tel Aviv pay the cost, they pay for the actions of a government which seeks to enlarge an illegal occupation of an occupied territory. Do most Israelis realize that their tax money has been heavily invested by their government into building an illegal wall around the West Bank instead of improving their lives in Israel? This is the real injustice, ending the occupation leads to the accomplishment of your goals in achieving social justice.

As Ali Abunimah has put it: “So #j14 is like whites protesting for better incomes in 1985 South Africa, but leaving out apartheid because it’s “too divisive.”

And quoting Joseph Dana’s twitter too: “Many #j14 protesters say that the movement is “apolitical” which is code for “we don’t talk about the Palestinians or the Occupation.”

I really cannot say I support this movement now, but I believe it can turn to be good in one way. Those who claim that they oppose occupation and the ill treatment of Palestinians should use this vibrant environment to come out strong, come up with a new list of demands that would call for an end of occupation and grant social justice and equality for everyone, all citizens who are under Israeli rule, including the occupied territories. This is your chance, now is the time!

Always being afraid of what the community would think is the way to never change. If they decide to ignore the injustice, then they silently approve of it. I don’t want misleading messages that this protest has people who call for an end to occupation when I don’t see that in news headlines or official demand list. It is never too late though!

Dig in.

The Israeli Summer, the Arab Spring,..and,I believe later this year we may very well see the beginnings of an American Fall..

There is great Opportunity in the air..an unparralled historical worldwide juncture, opportunity, which I believe has the potential to inspire and change the hearts and minds of the working class and poor of the world so much so that they may actually glimpse the first slivers of Glorious light of Liberation.Peace,Hope and the Hope of a new Dawn,a Global Springtime..

    Demonstrations,insurrections for all seasons...

    All Power to the People!

The people have the power to stop Imperialism, capitalist exploitation, and war, taking power by any means necessary away from the world's ruling class capitalists,imperialists,feudalists..

The Arab Spring in solidarity,in unity, with the Israeli Summer..synergetically encouraged and pushed forward by American Arab-Isreali-World Solidarity..it can be done!
We americans have a big role in all of this,we can serve as a great catalyst and inspiration to the Peace Process. We have a big job cut out for us,we shall have our season too..our American Fall..

The Arab People, the People of Israel, the People of the World have the power to stop the conflict,to end the wars..

Let the People make the future, a People's Unity forging Trust and Friendship.

An inspired worldwide People's Power movement would be unstoppable, invincible,it could remove from the capitalist war mongers, feudal forces, the imperialists, from their respective societies, the power of instigating, making war and creating divisive conflict.

Peace can be achieved once the People realize their common interests as human beings,as workers and poor people who only wish to survive, have opportunity, live in peace,to breathe the exhilirating clean fresh air of Freedom..the pure air which humans have not breathed in ages..

I believe we are entering an epoch period never before seen in human history..

IMHO,there is actually a very real possibility of ending the so called Arab-Israeli Conflict and by extension opposing capitalism and neutralizing imperialist wars, the capacity of the ruling classes to foment war for profit.

Chicanofuturet, did you even read the article? It makes the case that this is specifically NOT a demonstration of solidarity with the Palestinians or the rest of the Arab world, but rather a reformist movement comfortably within the framework of a racist, settler-colonialist society.

IMO we will never see a mass movement in Israel for Palestinian liberation as long as the vast majority of Israeli settlers continue to materially benefit from the occupation as they do now, just as there was never a mass movement of Euroamerican settlers for Native liberation.

Both you and the author can draw your own conclusions..I'm making a different case..a case which envisions, seeks, promotes the positive aspects, the potentials for opportunity, Peace and Change, rather than embracing a cynical de facto fatalism,a tacit acceptance of hopelessness.

Neither the Arab Spring, the mass demonstrations in Israel, nor the revolts in Greece and Europe, the World, are absolute.

We struggle for, encourage, express solidarity with the positive, proletarian, revolutionary aspects in all these struggles and uprisings rather than raise our hands in surrender to capitalism,to neo-liberalism and it's philosophy .."all resistance is futile"..that we accept the ideological death sentence of ruling class "The end of history".

Pessimism and fatalism are not revolutionary..that's why they call these worldwide struggles and movements "Springtimes".

Don't give up hope Eli M-H..

Is there any place in the world that GLOBALIZATION has not become a dirty word. So the citizens of Israel many of whom cannot afford to live or put a roof over their heads. The calls from a section of the crowd for equal treatment for all citizens is most welcome and long overdue. It is a call that must not be silenced. The trade unions must put their weight behind these movements or see their members standards of living drop further. Butter before Guns. Israel must have secure borders and the Palestine state must be fully guaranteed. A real peace dividend, the road to prosperity lies in peace.

Eli M-H...please explain how the majority of Israelis benefit from occupation...it's a puzzle to me! Apart from the cost to Israel of world public opinion and it's role as a rogue state, the material costs of occupation must be horrendous. Does Israel merely function as an aircraft carrier for US....all expenses paid? Or the (im)famous Jewish Lobby and increasingly the EU buttressing it? With IRAN, SUDAN LIBYA Syria and a host of petty feudal monarchs targeted for the 'global' treatment......it does not look as if OBAMA is quite ready to jump ponies, yet. I should so like to have a clearer understanding...........certainly the American people must see an end game insight.....not wish to bankroll Israel until some obscure biblical prophecy is fulfilled . The Israelis already have one Wailing Wall, taxpayers and Palestinians have been gifted with a second, surely a time for reflection and action.....
