Kudos for the in-your-face response of the folks getting harassed by Agent Smith. Never hide, don't talk: there is nothing to apologize for when the government acts to limit our speech, political activities or associations. In their response, there is however a strange air of "we are just ordinary kids and moms and secretaries with an antiwar edge, and an occasional Colombian flag."
Is there an element of downplaying key things here? Why is there no mentioning of international solidarity and contacts that triggered these raids -- the meetings with Colombian and Palestinian insurgent groups?
Isn't there a deliberate disappearing of the word "socialism" and with it the name "Freedom Road Socialist Organization"? What politics does that serve? And how well does it serve the actual truth?
Was Ethel Rosenberg just a misunderstood and startled Jewish mom in Brooklyn? And if we pretend that, who does it fool? And doesn't it degrade something about the truth, and about the stakes?
Shouldn't we have respect for our audiences, and speak to them like adults? And as if we have the courage of our actual convictions?
In the 1950s, supporters of the Communist Party USA were ordered to publicly deny communist party membership to McCarthite inquisitors. In the 60s, more radical communist forces carved a different approach.
How should we do it in our new century? Do people seeing this video walk away with a real understanding of the motives and politics of either the FBI and their targets? Or is this a picture through a distorting lens?0 Like -

PermalinkFolks who have a dedication to serious radical thought may or may not choose to be closeted. Families with kids may choose a higher level of closetry than others. The way you come out as a community is together, easing one another out of the hold fear has upon us, not neccesarily one by one. brilliant arrows of light are essential, but not the whole picture. Think of queer kids who come from families where it's not safe to come out. The way to be a person is cultural, not neccesarily political or economic. When you realize that, questions of security become grounded, even to the most painful of realities. I'm glad this "hush hush" tendency is being questioned by Mike. That said, loud and proud with no shades of grey is also not always useful. With something as ubiquitous as anti-Communism has become since the 50's or so, an internal strategy building around these points is useful. Personal process is part of that.
